Nursery Checklist

Crib - Obviously you won't be overlooking this principal piece in your nursery, but there are a few things you want to know. Find comfort knowing that any crib you purchase from a respected manufacturer will have passed modern safety standards. Your decisions can be made mostly on looks and expense. If you are using a hand me down you will want to have it inspected. It also makes good sense to go with a crib that converts to a toddler bed.

Mattress Pad - Waterproof is a key term here. Why buy any other?

Outlet Covers - Don't let yourself be surprised when the little one starts crawling around. Be prepared in advance.

Bassinet or Cradle - You'll probably want to sleep in the same room as the child for a while. Just make sure your cradle has a wide base and strong locks that won't fold up while in use.

Crib Bedding - Sheets and blankets should be minimal and fit tightly to the mattress so that they don't pose a safety hazard. Crib bumpers keep the child from injuring himself on the sides of the crib and provide a soft nest for sleep. Bed skirts soften the look of a traditional crib, and let you coordinate the crib bedding with the rest of the room.

Nursery Decor - The nursery is a child's entire world for the first few months. Decorate the room with soothing shades and intriguing shapes and textures to allow for calm sleep and energizing play. Mobiles hang above the crib and give the child a focal point while relaxing. Add colorful storage baskets, rugs, wall hangings, and lamps to the nursery to create a special atmosphere just for your child.

Toy Boxes - This is a nice item to get right away. It can double as storage until the child's toy collection becomes substantial. It will then will return to storage once the toy collection becomes obsolete. Look for slow-closing lids, ventilation holes, and no latches.

Changing Table - You'll be doing this a lot, so a surface made especially for changing is a sensible idea. Don't settle for anything without safety straps and easy access to your changing materials so you won't have to leave the baby unattended.
