Crib to Toddler Bed

Transitioning your child from a crib to a toddler bed

Storkcraft Rochelle Traditional Baby Crib Between 18 and 36 months of age, it is time to move the child out of the crib. If you didn't invest in a convertible crib, you'll wish you had on the way to purchase a toddler bed. A cozy bed that grants independence and safety is important for developing good sleep habits.

Benefits of a Toddler Bed:

  • Proper height for a child means independence getting in and out as well as less serious injury in case of a fall.
  • Safety rails are still necessary for a tossing toddler.
  • Most use crib mattresses.

What to Do:
There are some added safety concerns when changing your child's sleeping arrangements. Now that it's possible to roll out of bed, place the bed flush against a wall to minimize the chance. A sizable guardrail should be mounted on the open side.

Experiment with bedding:
It is likely that your child will be a little uncomfortable at first, so pad the bed with favorite blankets and plush toys to recreate the crib. Some children even like the feeling of a sleeping bag.

A miniature nightstand is a nice touch for several reasons. You can keep a cup of water within reach and keep the current bedside story on hand. Larger nightstands can be tempting to climb on.

And since the child will no longer be confined to a crib, it is time to get a little more creative with your childproofing. Use those outlet covers everywhere and be sure heavy drawers are fastened tight. This is a big moment for your child. Create a fun and accommodating environment to foster independence and a little responsibility.
